Operating Instructions For Your New Dog

Congratulations on your new purchase!

Below are basic instructions for managing your new pup. Whether you have the standard Puppy 1.0 (8 wks old)  or Puppy 2.0 (still a pup but under two years old) these are the basics in handling and managing your new puppy.

1.  Do enroll him/her in an Obedience class. (called Puppy class if very young)

2.  Large Breed Arthritis Prevention. Choose a large breed puppy kibble if s/he is a large breed. The large breed kibble contains glucosamine and hopefully chondroitin. These elements make up cartiledge, which is what will wear and tear between joints in both you and he as we age. The heavier the dog, the earlier the cartiledge disappears, as it does in humans for the same reason.  If you live somewhere that does not sell more than one or two generic puppy chows,  ask the vet when you can start supplementing the kibble with human-grade glucosamine and chondroitin, available at all pharmacies. (Vets will tell you their version of these minerals is chelated so it breaks down easier or whatever.  Be guided, if you can’t afford food and products sold by your veterinarian, by the fact that human-grade minerals are easy to ingest and of the highest quality.)

3. Buy a crate for your dog if it is under two or three years of age and chews furniture, cellphones, eyeglasses, walkmans, the interiors of vehicles, etc.  If you are not sure your dog will do that when left alone, buy a crate to be safe. The crate should not be much larger than his/her body. It should not allow him/her to stand up comfortably inside it or it won’t encourage him to be calm in it. Your body/his body feels sleepy after it is in a horizontal position. The crate is intended to house an already exercised dog. Never, according to Cesar, put a dog into a crate before it has been walked and given a good chance to move its bowels and empty its bladder. Never (Cesar said this in Ottawa from the Scotiabank stage) leave a dog in a crate for more than four hours. Give your dog a few kibble as a treat when s/he goes into his/her crate. Always have a comfortable bed or bedding inside the crate. Dogs in the wild never pee or poo in their crate.  If s/he receives all treats in the crate it won’t be the jail cell it looks like to you.

4. Don’t give your dogs soup bones. They make the dogs fat, one vet told one of my clients. They break off in slivers and choke dogs. You will find yourself tripping on them around the house. They cause dogs to fight over them. Get substitutes such as rawhides but mind how many of these they eat.

5. Socialize your dog with adults, kids, dogs and other pups. Ask your vet how soon, usually three months old, between shots (vaccinations) s/he can join in play with other dogs. Do not play rough with your pup. Don’t use your hands to discipline a dog. Don’t let kids tease the dog. Let the dog win when it has done what it can to do so. Don’t let kids unnecessarily frustrate him. Use your patience, and your willingness to keep, silently, putting him/her back in a ‘sit’ position or back onto the other side of the line dividing your kitchen from the rest of the house (so you can cook without getting hounded (pun) by him while you cook later on.) Don’t growl with him while he plays. Stop the tug of war or the game when he puts his paws on you or uses his paw to bring your arm to him, or growls. Later on, breed willing, growling play can become aggressive growling, a precursor on the road to aggression.

6. Put your hands in his food while he is gobbling it up. This prevents him from biting hands or paws that pass near him later on when he is eating. Do this a few times a week while he is still a pup.

7. Don’t let him initiate affection. In the ancestors of dogs, dominance is established first via affection. The dominant dog in a pack licks, touches the less dominant.  Be aware of yourself becoming the submissive to his/her dominant. You do not want this later on. You don’t want him using his muzzle to knock your arm off the steering wheel cos he wants a petting. A dog grooms you cos he is literally setting you up to do what he wants. If you let him initiate the affection you usually find that twenty minutes later he is crying at the cupboard door where the treats are kept.

8. A tired dog is a happy dog. Nervous energy, whining, separation anxiety: all these are tensions and unbalanced energy states. Prevent them and cure them with vigorous exercise as early in the day as you can manage it.  Do not train him/her prior to dissipating this nervous energy by vigorous exercise.  The only way the backyard is enough is if you are out there with him/her, throwing a ball or running around for a minimum of twenty minutes. Their ancestors were hungry upon rising, and quickly moved off in a pack to hunt their breakfast. Go with this flow.

9. Daily routine: Get up earlier than him/her in order to prevent him/her becoming dominant by becoming your alarm clock on the weekends. Try the following daily routine:

Morning: Quick walk on the leash before bed the night before and a couple of kibble after s/he enters the crate and “nitey nite.” If you want him/her to sleep in your bed, no kibble for entering the bed. (duh!)

When your alarm goes off, after relieving yourself, dressing,  (if you live in an apartment building) pee him. Then, while you shower and dress, leave his/her kibble bowl on the floor (unless you are in a two week behaviour modification with him, in that case give him all his kibble by hand in response to obedience requests–sit/stay, down/stay, hide-around- the- corner/ stay, down at a distance, sit at a distance, come  —“come” has a sit as a default at the end).  After twenty minutes return to the kibble bowl. If all the kibble has not been devoured, remove the bowl from him/her. If you leave it there for him throughout the day, you promote dominance in your dog. He/she “owns” the bowl, and if your friend pops over with their dog, in the future, there will be fights as your dog thinks it is natural to always have HIS or HER food lying around. In other words, you are promoting dominance and therefore yappy behaviours, guarding behaviours, etc. All precursors to aggression and other doggy problems down the road. YOU OWN HIS/HER FOOD. HE DOES NOT. Pee him on a short walk now, unless you have time in the morning to walk him longer and thereby avoid having to hire Dave and I to come get him. If you can give him a thirty minute walk before work, and a twenty minute walk at lunch you don’t necessarily need to hire us or other dog walkers. But you must promise to take him for a good play session/LONG RUN at the park after you return home, and you must NEVER LEAVE HIM ALONE MORE THAN FOUR HOURS.

Evening: If you have hired people like us to exercise him, just pee him when you get in. Then repeat morning routine: leave bowl down for only twenty minutes or if on a behavioural campaign with him, feed by hand in exchange for sit/stay, down/stay, come, etc.  Remove bowl after twenty minutes.  If he has not cleaned out his bowl in those twenty minutes try making him do those respect commands and giving food as reward out of your hand. Food tastes better when the human thinks he is giving you a treat, for some reason. I agree food should never be a reward for obeying respect commands (sit stay down  come). However:  It is a fact I learned in Educational Psychology in Teachers’ College, that if, during the initial teaching of something, you randomly reward (when the subject cannot predict whether a reward is coming or not) you will so ingrain a behaviour in the subject, as to classify the subject as addicted to that behaviour. (If cigarettes constantly rewarded you, as opposed to once in a while kicking your butt, for example, you would not be addicted to them.)

After supper pee him/poo him. Short walk before bed. He should have a big big walk/play session once a day for an hour.

10. Kibble as Treats: I recommend kibble instead of treats. Measure out, each a.m.,  all the kibble you want your pup to consume, as per instructions on the bag. If you use treats other than kibble and rawhides and safe toys, you run the risk of getting a choosy dog who shuns his kibble. This can result in constant diarrhea throughout its dominant little life. If you don’t want dog problems–all dominance-related, including separation anxiety, by the way–reserve liver treats, etc. for the obedience class and for the obedience lessons. When a pup is young and crazy, or during a period you are trying to curb a behaviour, or redirect one, pour out all the daily kibble in a measuring cup or bowl and leave it on the kitchen counter at the back of the counter.  (I say “at the back” for those with breeds tall enough to counter-surf. I say it to train YOU, not the dog. All habits you develop while s/he is young will stay with you.) Throughout the day POUNCE on a behaviour you accidentally find him doing that you love. Use your happy voice and touch instead of food rewards but use the available kibble to REALLY reinforce excellent compliance, etc. In other words use kibble as treats. During a campaign to correct/redirect a behaviour, feed him ALL HIS DAILY KIBBLE by your hand, in exchange for your requests. I recommend two week campaigns every once in a while where all their daily food is paid to them by hand in exchange for obeying sit/stay/down/come commands.

STAY. always ask for this following a SIT. Flatten your palm towards his/her nose, and leave it there, a few inches from its face at first, backing up and finally disappearing round a corner. Peek out and catch him breaking the stay. Say “ah ah” and physically replace his body in the position you asked for. Your willingness to replace him into that position everytime he breaks it will win out. No further punishment necessary, other than wearing him out. It is a power struggle. Dont lose it by your sense of hopelessness. Keep replacing him into that spot till you win. This struggle lasts only a day or so. Be willing for a couple of days to keep replacing him into that requested position no matter what. After a day or so you won’t have to.

Walking on a Leash. Do not kick yourself or beat yourself up if your dog pulls. That whole pulling can be eradicated thing is where I disagree with Cesar Millan. Buy your dog a haltie (not the kind with the clip under the chin…those break and cost way more than the haltie.) If you have his snout you have his direction. You will still have some pulling. Understand that the second you get him over to the off leash park he will run and play and exhaust himself. Returning home onleash s/he will not pull.

One of Bobbi’s Mommies Visits a Camp for Alleged Witches in Africa

My first client. My longest doggie-love, Bobbi, aka Bobo, aka Bobo-na-Gogo (her African name that i invented once I knew Joanna and Ellen were going to Africa for 3 – 5 years.) Joanna and Ellen, Bobo’s moms, after two years of my walking and babysitting Bobbi, asked me to formally adopt her and they pay me for her upkeep. This is what Mummy Jo does for a living. She accepted the job last June as CEO of Action Aid, the 8th largest charity in the world. About 40 countries report to their CEO, Joanna. Bobbi is very proud of both her moms, who work around the clock to assist women and children, and men of developing nations.

A short dance with the alleged witches in Ngani, Ghana

from her blog:

Dear ActionAiders,

Last week I was in Ngani in northern Ghana visiting a camp for alleged witches, one of six such communities that ActionAid works with. The majority of the inhabitants are old women and widows who have been accused of witchcraft, attacked and chased out of their homes, and who have little contact with families and their former way of life.  For most of them, a mere suspicion and denunciation from a jealous neighbour finds them in long-term exile…their power as women too threatening.  But now, only after a couple of years of participatory work in the community with Reflect circles and consciousness-raising, these women are asking to go home.  Emboldened by new possibilities and knowledge of their rights, they have asked ActionAid to prepare their home communities for reintegration.  Even ActionAid Ghana colleagues were surprised and delighted by this new sign of hope.

Probably one of the best parts of this job is experiencing change like this and witnessing the real impact on the ground.  In the picture below from last week, you’ll find Hussaini (CD for Nigeria) and I sitting in a makeshift classroom in Kogi State, Nigeria. The structure, the land it is on and the two teachers who attend to these kids are a result of a hard fought battle by the community to get the government to provide what was rightfully theirs. It’s not much, but it’s a start.

Nora again here. Both Bobbi’s moms work for the improvement of the quality of life of women and children and men in developing countries. They also wrote a book together called . . .

The Future of Women’s Rights

The Future of Women’s Rights identifies the emergence of various trends threatening the advance of gender equality, women’s human rights and sustainable human development. These phenomena include the impacts of globalization and neoliberal economics, developments in biotechnology, the neo-conservative backlash against women’s rights, monopolistic ownership patterns over information technologies, the rise of identity politics marginalizing women’s issues, and the increase in violent conflict and war. The contributors to this volume are united in seeing a pressing need for women’s movements to evaluate their methods, with a view to making their future political work more effective. They identify current issues and trends in the world, thinking through how these may impact women and the work of women’s movements.

My Stand On Ontario’s PITBULL Stand

There are two  mixed-breed pit bulls/boxers in my pack and yes they are a handful and yes they are extremely lovable. I adore them and I see stuff in them at times (stuff I modify) that might come from the pit side of their genetic inheritance.

As Cesar says, you have to give recognition to breed to explain behaviour. And finally, yes, humans can assist dogs to return to balanced behaviour. Just look at Daddy (RIP) and Junior, in Cesar’s pack.

Following his example, and, using a variety of methods that I have garnered in my self-led training, in my Master’s of Education, in my history altering adolescent human behaviour,  I have successfully turned around, to date,  two dogs who were fear aggressive. As research shows, dominant aggression cannot be reversed. The owners of dominant aggressive dogs, either pits or not, will have to muzzle their dogs for life. I temperament test first to determine whether a dog is fear aggressive or dominant aggressive. Note: as in all breeds, not all pits are dominant aggressive. Most have no aggression issues at all and some have the redeemable fear aggression. If someone hired me to work with their pitbull, I would, but I would never introduce it to my pack.

I won’t take American Pit Bulls or Staffordshire pit bulls that are pure in my pack as I did have a bad experience a long time ago. (THEY WERE NEVER INTRODUCED TO MY PACK.) That doesn’t mean there are not fantastic “pure” pit bulls in the hands of excellent owners. I love meeting them at Bruce Pit and they seem extremely lovely dogs in the hands of wonderful owners. I don’t fear them. I just won’t expose my small dogs to them.

In the ’80’s I saw pit bulls come to Canada. The punk world, I believe, brought them into fashion. I followed the stories in the newspapers of various small dogs on leash out walking all around Ontario, who were attacked by pitbulls who, up to that point, had been nothing but good, loving dogs in the care of intelligent owners. I recall from the ’80’s and ’90’s, newspaper stories where the owners were completely flumoxed, as if a spirit had suddenly awoken in their loving, obedient pits, and killed a small dog. One of the comments from beneath the Cesar story puts it this way:

Myles Ling
I say Yes allow the dog in under one condition, HE WEARS A MUZZEL, as I know first hand what power these dogs do have, as I was walking my german shepherd and we came upon a pitty with his owner 6ft and strong, well that dog DRAGGED the owner 15ft across a lawn and across a sidewalk to get to mine and when he di I put the boots to the pittbull, it released and came back for a second time, I did the same thing again and then pinned its head with my knee untill the dogs owner got up off the sidwalk brushed the grass off of himself and looked at me like it was my fault, never asked how my dog was and I promptly said “I will send you the vet bill” and I did it was $150.00 my dog did not eat for 2 days his throat was sore to touch, now if you never have seen this happen as I did and never want to see it again then you bleeding hearts will think twice about these dogs, all my dog was doing was minding his own business and walking beside me, believe me you cant trust them.

I agree with Ontario’s ban on pit bulls because of one other issue with pit bulls: Pit bull fighting. As you cannot stop the Michael Vicks that we do not know about from continuing a terrible and cruel hobby, but you can make it more difficult for them. By having an example in one province, I hope that other provinces and states will follow. Yes, I know you will only drive it further underground as Cesar says, but I differ from Cesar in that I hope pits will eventually be around in a format that has been diluted by breeding with other breeds.

It’s illogical to cling to “you can’t blame the dog for the humans’ use of them” as your stand on pit bulls. If a person breeds pit bulls, s/he has zero control over how they will be eventually used. S/he can sell the dog to a “nice” owner only to have the owner give it up to a Humane Society if her child becomes allergic, or the dog develops a condition she cannot afford to pay for, or any other kind of reason why a dog is rehomed. The dog can be adopted at the Humane Society by a stalwart citizen, who, perhaps owes a favour to someone who owes a favour to him, etc. You cannot control the outcome. A dog isn’t an independent, speaking creature that can choose to leave its owner. It needs the human community to maintain high standards that recognize the greater culture out there into which it can be dragged, only to be tortured and killed, in cruel ways as were Vick’s dogs.

Below  the Cesar story and comments from the news website is the history of the Michael Vick dogs, for those who don’t know the story. Scroll to the bottom of the Cesar story for that.

Ban forces Dog Whisperer to leave pit bull at home

Ontario's pit bull ban prevented Cesar Millan, 'The Dog Whisperer', from bringing his sidekick with him on a recent trip to Ontario.Ontario’s pit bull ban prevented Cesar Millan, ‘The Dog Whisperer’, from bringing his sidekick with him on a recent trip to Ontario.

Updated: Wed Nov. 03 2010 2:46:07 PM

The Canadian Press

TORONTO — There are some problems even the Dog Whisperer can’t solve.

Cesar Millan isn’t allowed to bring his trusted sidekick, Junior, into Ontario — the Liberal government banned pit bulls five years ago, saying the breed was too dangerous.

“It was a very difficult decision,” Attorney General Chris Bentley said Wednesday.

“I mean, I have a dog myself. She’s part of the family. But we heard many complaints from the people in the province. … So we had to take steps.”

Millan, a celebrated canine trainer and host of the popular TV show “The Dog Whisperer,” rehabilitates aggressive dogs — often with Junior’s help.

He shouldn’t be denied his right-hand companion as he crosses Canada for a speaking tour, New Democrat Cheri DiNovo argued Wednesday in an open letter.

“So once again, a responsible owner is being discriminated against because of the physical appearance of his dog — not the dog’s behaviour, but his looks,” she wrote.

DiNovo even appealed to Bentley’s office to make an exception for Junior, a three-year-old certified therapy dog that Millan adopted as a puppy.

Ontario’s ban only makes exceptions for pit bulls that participate in dog shows and flyball, a dog sport involving a race with hurdles and tennis balls.

But Bentley wouldn’t budge, saying Junior is not welcome in Ontario.

“I really respect the work of Cesar Millan, the work that he does,” he said.

“You know why we brought in the pit bull legislation. It was to protect people and protect dogs — protect other people’s pets.”

The grey-and-white pit bull mix has accompanied the Dog Whisperer on all his Canadian shows except the ones in Ontario, said NDP spokeswoman Marion Nader.

Millan even advertised Junior’s participation in the tour, calling him an “ambassador” who brings “calm and balance” to dogs who need rehabilitation.

Millan was concerned that Junior — who often helps him calm aggressive dogs on his show — would be seized by authorities if he brought him into the province, she said.

After a member of Millan’s staff contacted the Ministry of the Attorney General, an official wrote back, saying it couldn’t provide any legal advice.

“There have been numerous horrific incidents that have happened in Ontario and elsewhere, in which people have been killed or severely maimed by pit bulls,” the letter states.

“The government decided that the interests of public safety would be best served by restricting pit bulls under the Dog Owners’ Liability Act (DOLA) to prevent more attacks and bites from this breed.”

The ban applies to breeds considered to be pit bulls, such as Staffordshire bull terriers, or any dog that looks like one of those breeds.

Millan has often espoused his belief that dogs are not inherently dangerous, saying it’s humans who often influence their behaviour.

He even dedicated an episode of his television show to dispel myths about breeds that are considered to be particularly dangerous, showing some of the toughest cases he’s encountered and how the dogs have turned over a new leaf.

In my opinion it is always the dog owner who is at fault, or the breeder. My dog is a Husky cross and is one of those considered “dangerous”, she wouldn’t hurt a fly, because I trained her not to be aggressive toward people, she will defend herself against other dogs and I see no problem with that as long as it doesn’t get into the out and out fighting, which it never has. Dogs are naturally assertive toward other dogs by nature, but once they know who the alpha is that quickly stops. This banning is just another typical knee jerk reaction by McGuinty and his cronies that did nothing to address the problem and that was the owners.

Great. I just thought a few days ago, how I will vote NDP in the next provincial election. Now one of them speaks out trying to create an issue and take a side she thinks is popular with total disregard for all of the other angles and implications of her argument. Laws should not apply to celebrities and professionals?
UGH! or worse yet – If a law inconveniences a celebrity or professional, it should then be changed – not because all the while that it has bothered thousands of regular people?

Get over it. It’s only a dog. They can stay at home alone.

Susan in Ottawa
I thought that this law was ridiculous to begin with. The aggressive dogs are aggressive due to the way the owners raise and treat them.
Cesar Milan’s dog Junior, would be the SAFEST dog in the WHOLE province! It is a shame that this wonderful man can’t bring his trusted working dog to this province. I can only imagine how Welcome he must feel here, in the Nations Capital – shameful!

Hobbes
How damned silly can we get as nervous nellies? When did our society become so anxious and panic stricken over nothing? Let the dog come–his trainer is responsible, not the dog if something goes wrong. From a nation of renowned soldiers and hardy citizens we have degenerated into wimps! And only in 50 years–woe to the future!

dwayne-ottawa
and this is news because why???? if it was you or i traveling with a dog and we could not come into ontario do you think we would get any press coverage at all?? What a waste of a web page

Frankie
If your are going to have a ban don’t you think it should be inforced? I sure isn’t in the Ottawa area.

Lane
I am sure we are the only stop on Cesar’s tour that he can’t bring Junior – this is an embarassment. The pitbull ban is BS…we should BAN irresponsible dog owners not dogs. If anyone knows, it’s Cesar.

John Plamonodn
Well it has finally come back to byte the politicals in the bum hasn’t it To blame all the problems on one bread of dog Just look at Cesar’s pit bull. It is a very sad day when a man like him can’t show us his price pit bull in action. Junior and before him DADDy are always apart of the National Geographics show that so many people are now watching and finding ways to cope with their dogs.
Shame on the Politicians with the little minds not to see what has happended.
John P.

Ronald
Pit bulls are a time bomb and so is all dogs. I do not trust any dog even if the owner tells me that the animal is not aggressive. Dogs have a mind of there own and we in this province have severe taugh laws on pit bulls and they must be respected and if he does not like the law so be it but it must be respected and I agree with that law 100%.
I saw a woman a few months ago a helderly lady who had to walk on the street because there was two un muzzle pit bulls walking on the side walk coming towards her because she was so afraid of them and almost got hit by a car. The owner was to stupide to respect the muzzle law and put this poor woman in danger.

Marion
Since the Liberals banned the pit bulls, how come we can’t ban the “Liberals”.
I agree with Cesar that it is not the breed but the person who owns the dog. Many years ago, I was almost bit in the face by a Dalmation. Yes, a Dalmation. To this day, I do not trust a dalmation, yet I have no fear or trouble with pit bulls, dobermans etc.Cesar, thanks for all you do. Thanks for coming up to Canada. The spirit of the truly wonderful “Daddy” resides in “Junior”. Enjoy your stay in our great country.

Joanne Richer
I totally agree with Mr. Milan’s comment that most often, it is the owner who influences a dog’s behaviour. My daughter and her boyfriend have rescued two pit bulls and I have spent a lot of time with these dogs. They are well behaved, well trained and very gentle. Never did they show signs of aggressiveness. I totally disagree with the law that bans pit bulls in the province of Ontario. My son-in-law will soon graduate from university and looking for a teaching job but because of that ban, he will not be able to move to Ottawa, where his chances of obtaining a good teaching position would be greater, just because of the breed of his two gentle pets!

GS
I agree that the owners have more to do with agressiveness than a breed by itself. But also knowing that Ontario has banned these dogs (with good reasons) I do not feel bad for Milan’s companion being left at home. Milan has enough dogs and can bring another breed to do his shows. Pitt bulls might be good dogs but our experiences in this Province justifies the actions taken- the ban. MIlan can deal with just about any dog while the regular public often cannot. The good people always pay for the idiots that cause the problems.

Melina
It’s ludacris that Cesar can’t bring his dog Junior into our province because of fear that he will be seized by authorities. You would think he would be allowed to help demistify the popular belief that all Pitbulls are aggressive and that they can be non-violent pets and live in harmony with families who give them the proper training. I was exposed to Pitbulls growing up and there was never any stigma against these beautiful animals. It is all in the training and resposibility of the owner. Its a shame. I think Junior would have set a great example for our “Liberal Government”.
Melina

Drala Halpin
I am appaled that someone as famous for helping animals would have to be concerned about his dog being seized in Ontario because of the breed type. The man is internationally known for his expertise in handling dogs and his main helper has to be left behind. This makes Ontario look like a huge pile of uptight asses, a dog is what the owner makes it and a lab or retreiver are just as likely to bit a person or child as a pit bull is-I have encountered many freinds over the years who have owned Pit bulls and have never have anyone of them bitten and never did I have any concers for my children aroung these dogs my son had a play mate at age 2 and he was a pit bull named Napaum who would play with my son and they would wrestle and he would lick my sons ears until my son was ready to pee his pants he would be laughing so hard-I think this is a terrible thing and just shows how small minded people can be for shame.

Some Guy
Perhaps we need legislation against ignorant politicians and sweeping knee jerk reactions.

A law is a law people
OK all you bleeding hearts, we have a one tier law system here (or are at least supposed to). If you disagree with the Law then change the Law but change it for EVERYONE not just a celebrity coming to make millions of $. I have a 15 year Jack Russell Terrier and I love him to death so don’t start bashing me about not being a dog lover but change the Law and don’t critisize the law for being enforced…vote the liberals out then if that who you blame for this law…..go out and vote, talk to your MPP, get vocal about the law and change it….If police bent the law for every hard working well meaning person coming to our province, we would be in more of a mess than we are!

Pierre
I hope next November(2011) the people of Ontario will ban Dalton and his Liberals from another 4 year term in Toronto

Boomer
I guess Junior won’t be voting Liberal!
Long live The Dog Whisperer!

Trudy
What A Shame & DIsgrace that Cesar couldn’t bring Junior with him!!! I agree it’s all in how the dog is raised & trained, not the breed itself!

Chris
like seriously…………who really cares ????
no one………..get a life people !!!!

Reener
So what is the fear here? That Junior is going to get spooked by the bright lights, lunge at people in the front row and rip off their faces? He doesn’t fall under the exception rule just because this isn’t a traditional dog show? Nanny state is at it again. This country is a bureaucratic nightmare.

Marguerite
The law needs to apply to everyone

theresa scott
One must remember that, like humans, animals learn what they are taught. If yuo teach an animal to react to a certain stimuli in a specific way, the animal will reaqct that way every time. It’s what we TEACH (reinforce) the animal/human that results in the specific reaction. The dog should have been able to come to Canada/Ontario. After all, his master is ….’the dog whisperer..”

Larry
Well excuseeee my ignorance.
When did we adopt special laws just for celebrities? This is not LA folks and he is not Paris Hilton. LMAO !!

Mel
It is illegal in Ontario to own a pit bull so why would it be acceptable to allow him to bring his dog? Get over it. The pooch will be fine at home!!

Lauri
This man has done amazing things to help us understand our animals. Province of Ontario is terribly uneducated about pit bulls. ANY dog will be aggressive if the owner does not handle them or treat them right. Ceasar is amazing in teaching us how to handle, understand and be responsible pet owners. i have a dog and work everyday to make sure he gets all he needs. Ceasar is making people aware not only pitbulls are agressive but all dogs can be. Shameful we have denied him the opportunity to bring “Daddy” to Ottawa…. Welcome Ceasar sorry we are so uneducated!!!

Outraged Ottawa Resident
Ban the dog it’ll bite!
Let’s ban ALL dogs while we’re at it.Govt interfering in lives of people once more made mistakes.

Pittbulls are NOT dangerous. OWNERS of pittbulls who train them to be agressive are!

Stop punishing the innocent!

REPEAL the law.

Just watch Dog Whisperer and see for yourself. there are no “bad dogs” just bed trainers/owners!

And to those who think calling people idiots for it being “just a dog” tell that to those dogs who have given up their LIVES to save “people” after all, we’re “just people” to them!

Debbie Annable Carr
The Dog should be aloud. They let Criminals from other countries in. Why not the dog. And Its for a good couse, To help people train their pets.

Roger
I have nothing against the dog whisper but Ontario has laws and principals to be followed by EVERYONE including the influential people. So I say get over it and Mr Milan should demonstrate his skill rehabitating other people`s dog and training their owners. As I see it its the owners which need the most help then the dogs will adjust to the friendly environment while enjoying their new found habitat.

Terry M
My wife and I are outraged to think that a public figure such as Milan would be stupid enough to bring danger to a great show, I don`t know where to begin, however I will say this wake-up smell the coffee there are exceptions, I feel sorry for Milan because his dog is a perfect reason it`s ok to own any type of dog.
thank you

Murielle lebrun
I to think it’s the owners that are the problem, we’ve owned Rottys for fifteen years never had a problem. its the was you raise them, you are the boss not the dog.
Miel

terri
This “banning” of Ceasar’s wonderful dog Junior shows how silly this whole ban was in the first place.
One of the breeds included in this ban, the staffordshire bull terrier, is one of the greatest breeds of dogs with children. Southhampton University did a study of dogs with children and the staffie bull was in the top ten of all breeds for its good nature with children, the only terrier breed to make the top ten, but in Ontario, because of McGuinty and his liberal party, it is a banned breed.
The ban was never about dogs, it was about the government trying to take our attention away from their health tax, after they said in the election, no to new taxes.
In Ontario, there has never been a child killed by a pit bull, but there have been children killed by other breeds, if this ban was to have been to keep our children safe, those breeds, and not the staffie bull and pit bull, would have been banned.

joyce
I’m sorry to hear Cesar can’t bring his pit bulls to Ont. If I had one wish, I would asked Cesar to come and see my two beautiful females. He would love them to death. Politicians should keep their noses out of this one, and do what they are suppose to do for our country.

Mr. D.
All dogs should be banned in urban areas; dogs are a menace, especially when irresponsible owners are involved.
I’m tired of dodging poop and stupid owners with poorly trained dogs.
If you want a dog, go live in the country where the dogs have room to run, instead of making them live in cramped quarters with selfish owners.

Ryan G.
Ignorance and fear mongering are clearly king in this province.
Look at it this way… if we were to give in to every stereotype and ban something or somebody, we’d have nothing.Does this mean the same government would ban cars because of the circumstance of people jumping into them drunk and driving around?

Could it also mean that bears would be banned for maiming and killing innocent people who stumble into its’ tracks?

What about banning liberals for stealing the tax dollars of every hard working citizen in this province?

The provincial government doesn’t know how to say no to the minority, and thinks that every issue must be blown out of proportion so that it can pass laws with little resistance.

Jimmie in eastern Ontario
don’t worry …as of jan 1st, 2012 the liberal government is planning on implementing the accessibility law for each and every business in the province.
From what I understand, this new law gives anyone the right to go into any business/building with a pet they require for their personal comfort..Way to go McGuilty….hope the pit bull bites ya sorry …..

Katherine
Ronald, How many pit bulls have you met in your life or do you actually know? Have you ever had a dog as a pet? Have you ever watched Caesar Milan’s show? Given your comments it would seem that you just don’t like dogs. May I suggest that you check out Caesar’s show before you pass judgment on his dog. Might also be a good idea for you to do some work on your grammar and spelling at the same time.

Dave from Ottawa
I agree with “some guy”. Too many knee jerk reactions. To have a ban on a particular breed of dog just shows how ignorant the politicians are. If they ever watch an episode of Cesar’s show they too would be embarrassed to be an Ontario citizen. What must Cesar think?

danya
It’s only a dog people come on get over it.
What a wasite of webpage here.
There are more important things going on in the world.

Ian
Typical ideology overruling common sense.

Ian
It’s just another example of how this provincial government of ours thinks it always knows what’s best for us. ee are too incapable of doing what’s right that we need Dalton to tell us how to live.

jen
Pitbulls are an inherently dangerous dog. If a pitbull bites me and goes into a death bite, where it can’t release it’s jaw, this could kill me or my child. If a poodle bites me, it’s annoying and I might need stitches, but more than likely I wouldn’t die. This is why pitbulls are dangerous. There’s a chemical in their brain that can easily turn them from loving family pet to dangerous animal. It’s unique to this particular breed, mostly because they were bred poorly to begin with. I agree with the law. Why should a person of notoriety be able to skirt around it? Sometimes it’s just the dog, not the owner.

rescuetruth.com
Someone please tell me how banning a dog breed is considered “liberal.” I understand it’s a political party, but still… it seems backwards.

JON OCHS
THIS BAN ON ENTRY FOR CESAR MILLAN’S PITBULL JUNIOR IS PUERILE AND THOUGHTLESS.
EVERYONE WITH A MODICUM OF INTELLIGENCE AND COMMON SENSE KNOWS THAT THIS SPECIFIC DOG IS WELL-BALANCED AND NO THREAT—HE SHOULD BE EXEMPTED FROM THE BROAD BRUSH OF SOME OF HIS BREED’S RECENT NOTORIETY.
OUR GOVERNMENT SHOULD SHOW SOME PROACTIVE COURAGE AND GIVE HIM AN EXEMPTION JUST AS THEY DO FOR ENTERTAINERS , POLITICIANS AND OTHER PEOPLE SEEKING ENTRY WITH A STIGMA, REAL OR IMAGINED, ATTACHED TO THEM—ITS CALLED A MINISTER’S PERMIT AND ALLOWS TEMPORARY ENTRY FOR A SPECIFIC PURPOSE AND TIME LIMIT–
LETS COME TO OUR SENSES AND DO THE RIGHT THING

JON OCHS
ADDENDUM TO MY PREVIOUS COMMENT
RE: cesar millan and pitbull
USING THE GOVERNMENT’S RIDICULOUS EXTRAPOLATION IN THIS CASE WOULD BE ANALOGOUS TO REFUSING NELSON MANDELA OR ANY OF HIS ADVOCATE PROTESTERS FROM ENTERING CANADA BECAUSE THEY WERE JAILED AT ONE TIME OR HAD A SUBSEQUENT CRIMINAL RECORD BECAUSE OF THEIR PROTEST—THERE HAS TO BE SOME LATITUDE AND NONCONFORMING TO A GENERAL RULE THAT IS IMPRACTICAL AND HARSH

Wendy
I had a mix of pitbull/lab..he was the greatest dog at the time. He could pass other dogs and not make a fuss. It is the owners that make dogs vicious, not the dogs. Dogs have to be trained.

chuck ryer
Wow I bet you if the queen of England had a pit bull she could walk it down Rideau without protest. This is just stupid. The government needs to stop controlling our every right and decision. If a dog bited or attacks then it is the owners fault, charge them. But The government has NO right to tell me or anyone else what kind of dog I can have. But while we are at it I think we should ban long haired cats because their furr causes asthma reactions. The government will ban dogs but will allow smoking and drinking (which kill more people) What a upside down world we live in… oh wait it’s because they can’t tax dogs. Wait there is an idea! “Want a pit bull? Pay an extra tax and be specially registered like a gun”

Dog lover
This isn’t a political issue. It’s a public safety issue.
For those who think the law is ridiculous, you obviously have not seen what happens to a child or a pet when attacked by one of these dogs. Are the owners at fault? Partly. Yet well-trained and docile pit bulls have been known to kill for no particular reason.I think the Ontario govt. (no matter which political party is in power) did us all a great service by enacting this legislation.

It’s a dog, people. I’m sure Mr. Milan can afford to spend some of his millions to hire a personal dog sitter for this one visit to Ontario.

rich lees
Welcome to my country. Please obey its laws.Change the venue to Hull.
Problem solved.

Dennis r
On behalf of my self and all dog lovers in Ontario I apoligise to you Mr.Cesar Millan for not being allowed to bring Junior with you into Ontario.
Please understand it is not the view’s of us the people of Ontario but that of the Liberal Dictators in power at this time.Namely McGuinty and each and every Liberal member and the Ontario Attorney General Chris Bentley.

I feel Embarrassed as an Ontairoian that such a fine person and a great Dog is discriminated against due to his breed and not by his actions.

Please Mr Millan do come back in two years with Junior and he will be allowe to enter Ontario as next year we are tossing out All Liberals and the laws will be changed against Pit Bull Dogs.

As for the comment of (Ottawa) it’s plain to see you are not a Dog/Animal lover and if I had a wish it would be that you stay at home totally alone and have you internet disconnected as well.

We do not know what you love or don’t and we do not put you or your loves down so give us animal lovers the same respect we show you !!!!!!!!!!!!!

VIVA CESAR MILLAN

MICHAEL VICK’S PITBULLS AND THEIR SAD STORY

http://www.aldf.org/article.php?id=928 from the Animal Legal Defense Fund

Animal Fighting Case Study: Michael Vick

Animal fighting has been brought to the forefront of the nation’s attention by the highly publicized conviction of NFL star quarterback Michael Vick and three of his associates on federal and state charges related to illegal dogfighting. Vick and his associates operated the aptly named “Bad Newz Kennels,” which housed and trained over 50 pit bull dogs, staged dog fights, killed dogs, and ran a high stakes gambling ring with purses up to $26,000. The exposure of Bad Newz Kennels helped alert the nation to the viciousness of dogfighting that is commonplace in many communities despite the fact that dogfighting is outlawed in every state and, to some extent, by the federal government. To read about new laws and tougher penalties that have been enacted in the wake of the Vick case, see ALDF’s Animal Fighting Fact Sheet.

The Michael Vick case illustrates many attributes common to the dozens of organized dogfighting cases the Animal Legal Defense Fund has seen over the years:

  • The clandestine operation went undetected until law enforcement discovered it while investigating another crime.
  • The dogfighting activity was violent and bloody.
  • Dogs were methodically tested and poor performers executed.
  • Illegal gambling was a major part of the operation.
  • Shelters housing the seized dogs had to implement high security precautions.

This case has several unusual aspects, too:

  • The federal government brought charges (this is extremely rare).
  • One of the defendants had a very high public profile.
  • The dogs were not euthanized when the case concluded.
  • The court appointed a guardian/special master to handle final disposition of the dogs.

2001 – 2007 The Dogfighting Operation
Michael Vick, then 21, began his rookie year as a professional football player the same year he and three associates – Purnell Peace, Quanis Phillips and Tony Taylor – began a dogfighting operation named “Bad Newz Kennels” at a property purchased by Vick in Surry County, Virginia. They bought dogs in Virginia and other states and brought them to the new facility. Michael Vick became a registered dog breeder. The co-conspirators set up the property for a dogfighting venture. They built a fence along the side of the property, so that their activities would not be visible. They buried car axles with heavy chains, a common method for securing fighting dogs since the pivoting axle prevents the chain from tangling.

The men tested the dogs in fights, then shot, electrocuted, or hung dogs who did not perform well.

“In or about April 2007, PEACE, PHILLIPS, and VICK executed approximately 8 dogs that did not perform well in ‘testing’ sessions … by various methods, including hanging, drowning, and slamming at least one dog’s body to the ground.” (Federal indictment PDF)

A report by a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) investigator provided more details on the April 2007 killings, saying that the men hung approximately three dogs “by placing a nylon cord over a 2 X 4 that was nailed to two trees located next to the big shed. They also drowned approximately three dogs by putting the dogs’ heads in a five gallon bucket of water.” They killed one dog by “slamming it to the ground several times before it died, breaking the dog’s back or neck.”

According to a witness, the men fought their trained pit bulls with pet dogs, and they “thought it was funny to watch the pit bull dogs belonging to Bad Newz Kennels injure or kill the other dogs.”

They hosted fights at the Virginia property and transported dogs to other states to participate in fights. The fights usually occurred late at night or in the early morning and would last several hours. Before fights, dogs would be bathed to remove any poison or narcotic that might have been placed on them to hinder their opponents’ performance. Losing dogs sometimes died in the pit. Gambling purses were frequently in the thousands of dollars.

Dogs who lost fights were sometimes executed:

“In or about March of 2003, PEACE, after consulting with VICK about the losing female pit bull’s condition, executed the losing dog by wetting the dog down with water and electrocuting the animal.” (Federal indictment PDF)

In 2004, Vick had a 10-year, $130 million contract with the NFL. By 2006, he was the NFL’s highest-paid player.

April 25, 2007 The State Investigation
When Davon Boddie, Vick’s cousin, was arrested on drug charges, he gave Vick’s property as his address. Surry County authorities searching the property found probable cause to obtain a second search warrant for animal cruelty/dogfighting. Police discovered:

  • approximately 54 dogs, mostly pitbulls, some with scars and injuries; most were underfed
  • about half of the dogs were chained to car axles and just out of reach of each other, a typical arrangement for fighting dogs
  • a blood-stained fighting area
  • animal training and breeding equipment, including a “rape stand”, a device in which a female dog who is too aggressive to submit to males for breeding is strapped down with her head in a restraint
  • a “break” or “parting” stick, used to pry open fighting dogs’ mouths during fights
  • treadmills and “slat mills” used to condition fighting dogs
  • assorted paperwork documenting involvement in animal fighting ventures
  • performance-enhancing drugs commonly used to increase the fighting potential in dogs, as well as to keep injured dogs fighting longer.

Vick initially placed blame for the dogfight enterprise on family members who lived at the property, and he claimed that he never visited the property.

May 22, 2007 Defenders of Dogfighting

In a news interview reported by the Associated Press, two other football players defended Vick and ridiculed the idea that dogfighting is a crime:

…In an interview with WAVY-TV, (Clinton) Portis said that if the Atlanta Falcons quarterback is charged and convicted of being involved in a dog fighting operation, then authorities would be “putting him behind bars for no reason.”

“I don’t know if he was fighting dogs or not,” Portis said. “But it’s his property; it’s his dogs. If that’s what he wants to do, do it.”

Portis said dog fighting is a “prevalent” part of life.

Portis, a native of Laurel, Mississippi, added: “I know a lot of back roads that got a dog fight if you want to go see it. But they’re not bothering those people because those people are not big names. I’m sure there’s some police got some dogs that are fighting them, some judges got dogs and everything else.”

“Politicians,” added (Chris) Samuels, who found it hard to keep from giggling while Portis was talking.

“Presidents,” added Portis with a laugh.

June 7, 2007 The Federal Investigation
A witness told federal investigators that dog carcasses were buried on the property. A federal investigator then asked local authorities to execute a search warrant, but they did not. After waiting for a week, officials with the U.S. Department of Agriculture executed their own search warrant and found the remains of 6-8 dogs in two mass graves. A month later, on July 6, Federal investigators executed a fourth search warrant.

July 17, 2007 The Federal Case – Indictment
Vick, now 27, and his three associates were indicted by a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia and charged with violating federal law 18 U.S.C. § 371 Conspiracy to Travel in Interstate Commerce in Aid of Unlawful Activities and to Sponsor a Dog in an Animal Fighting Venture. The “interstate commerce” requirement gives the federal court jurisdiction over an activity otherwise regulated by the state. Interstate commerce in the Vick case included transporting fighting dogs across state lines and hosting dogfight participants from other states at Bad Newz Kennels. The charge is a felony with a maximum penalty of 5 years prison. A charge under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) for animal fighting activities in violation of 7 USC § 2156 would have carried only a maximum penalty of one year per violation.

August 27, 2007 The Federal Case – Guilty Pleas
After his three co-conspirators pled guilty and began cooperating with authorities, Vick also pled guilty, admitting to funding the dogfighting operation and the associated gambling operation. He admitted to knowing about four dogs that his co-conspirators killed in 2002, and he admitted to agreeing to the hanging and drowning of 6-8 dogs who underperformed in 2007. Vick admitted he provided most of the operation and gambling monies, but he claimed he did not gamble by placing side bets or receiving proceeds from the purses.

Under the sentencing guidelines for this crime, most first time offenders would have received no jail time. However, Chuck Rosenberg, the U.S. attorney who prosecuted the case, described the behavior of Vick, Peace and Phillips as “heinous, cruel and inhumane”, so he required that they accept a provision in the plea agreement that they “understated the severity of their conduct and that a sentence substantially above what would otherwise be called for by the guidelines would be appropriate.” Rosenberg recommended 12-18 months in prison rather than 0-6 months. Co-conspirator Tony Taylor was not included in this recommendation since he was the first to plead guilty and assist in the investigation. A sentencing hearing was scheduled for December 10, 2007.

The NFL suspended Vick indefinitely without pay. After he is freed from prison, he could be reinstated.

September 24, 2007 The State Case – Indictment
Five months after the initial investigation, a Surry County grand jury brought two charges against Vick:

  • one count of violating VA Code Ann. § 3.1-796.124, which makes it a Class 6 felony to promote dogfighting for amusement, sport, or financial gain or to possess, own, train, transport, or sell any dog intended for animal fighting
  • one count of violating VA Code Ann. § 3.1-796.122(H), which makes it a Class 6 felony to engage in the torture, ill-treatment, beating, maiming, mutilation, or killing of animals.

Peace, Phillips and Taylor were charged with promoting dogfighting . Taylor was also charged with three counts of unlawful torture and killing of dogs, and Peace was charged with one count. Each is a felony charge with a maximum 5 year prison term. The grand jury declined to bring eight possible additional counts of animal cruelty against the defendants.

The following is an excerpt from a news article describing the charges:

[Surry County Commonwealth Attorney Gerald] Poindexter said he pursued the case because “crimes that were not prosecuted were committed in Surry County.” But he would not say whether his prosecutors put Vick’s federal court admission that he killed dogs before the grand jury.

“Come on, lady, how much do you need to know?” he told a reporter who was pressing the issue.

October 1, 2007 The Federal Case – Dogs Evaluated
A team of animal behavior experts selected by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals analyzed the 49 seized dogs and then recommended whether they were suitable either to be adopted by families, trained as police dogs, placed in a sanctuary, or should be euthanized. Only one dog was recommended for euthanasia because of extreme aggression. The others were deemed suitable to go to sanctuaries or foster homes for socialization training.

October 12, 2007 The Federal Case – Vick Lied about Killing Dogs
Even after pleading guilty to the federal charges, Vick had not admitted to hands-on participation in the killing of poorly performing dogs. Investigators got conflicting statements from Vick’s co-conspirators. An FBI agent questioned Vick for five hours and gave him a polygraph test that indicated he was lying. Vick finally admitted to killing two dogs. According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Gill, Vick told the polygrapher, “I carried a dog over to Quanis Phillips, who tied a rope around its neck. I dropped the dog.”

October 15, 2007 The Federal Case – Court Appoints Guardian for Dogs
The U.S. District Court appointed Rebecca J. Huss, Professor of Law at Valparaiso University School of Law, as the guardian/special master to advise the Court regarding the final disposition of the remaining 48 seized dogs. Per her recommendation, the dogs were eventually dispersed to eight rescue organizations for adoption, rehabilitation or lifetime care in sanctuaries, where they have been neutered.

November 19, 2007 The Federal Case – Vick Reports Early to Prison
In a single day, Vick bought a $99,000 Mercedes; he cashed checks that totaled $24,900; he gave $44,000 to friends and relations; he paid a public relations firm $23,000; and then he reported to prison. In less than 3 months since the day he pled guilty to federal charges, Vick spent over $3 million.

December 10, 2007 The Federal Case – Sentencing
At the sentencing hearing, due to Vick’s deliberate false statements to federal investigators about his role in killing dogs, the prosecutor recommended Vick be sentenced at the upper end of the 12-18 month guideline range. Vick had also lied to investigators about testing positive for marijuana in September, a violation of the terms of his release on bail.

A probation officer, who did not believe Vick had accepted responsibility, recommended an enhanced sentencing range of between 18 months and two years in prison.

U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson said Vick also played a major role by “promoting, funding and facilitating this cruel and inhumane sporting activity”.

The judge added at least 5 months to the prosecutor’s recommended prison term, sentencing Michael Vick to 23 months in prison. Vick also received three years’ supervised probation during which he cannot buy, sell or own dogs. He was fined $5,000. Vick was also ordered to pay $928,073 as restitution for the 53 dogs seized from his property. He was required to enter a drug/alcohol treatment program and pay for the cost of treatment. Vick is scheduled to be released from federal prison July 20, 2009.

Peace, Phillips and Taylor all pled guilty to the same charge earlier in the year. Peace was sentenced to 18 months prison and Phillips to 21 months prison.

A few days later, Tony Taylor was sentenced. Since Taylor had been the first co-conspirator to plead guilty and had provided investigators with details of the dogfighting operation, the prosecutor had recommended that Taylor only serve probation. However, the judge said it wouldn’t be fair to give Taylor probation after sentencing his co-defendants to 18 months or more in prison. He told Taylor, “You were as much an abuser of animals as any other defendant in this case.” The judge sentenced Taylor to 2 months in prison.

The defendants cannot appeal the judge’s sentences.

January 25, 2008 The Federal Case – Sentencing an Accessory
Oscar Allen, who had sold a pit bull to Vick and had attended some of the fights, was sentenced to 3 years probation and a $500 fine. In October 2007 he had pled guilty to conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce and to aiding in illegal gambling and to sponsoring a dog in animal fighting. He had cooperated with the federal investigation.

February 2, 2008 The Dogs
A New York Times article followed up on the lives of several of the dogs who were transported to Best Friends Animal Society sanctuary. This excerpt describes a dog named Georgia:

A quick survey of Georgia, a caramel-colored pit bull mix with cropped ears and soulful brown eyes, offers a road map to a difficult life. Her tongue juts from the left side of her mouth because her jaw, once broken, healed at an awkward angle. Her tail zigzags.

Scars from puncture wounds on her face, legs and torso reveal that she was a fighter. Her misshapen, dangling teats show that she might have been such a successful, vicious competitor that she was forcibly bred, her new handlers suspect, again and again.

But there is one haunting sign that Georgia might have endured the most abuse of any of the 47 surviving pit bulls seized last April from the property of the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick in connection with an illegal dogfighting ring.

Georgia has no teeth. All 42 of them were pried from her mouth, most likely to make certain she could not harm male dogs during forced breeding.

Her caregivers here at the Best Friends Animal Society sanctuary, the new home for 22 of Mr. Vick’s former dogs, are less concerned with her physical wounds than her emotional ones. They wonder why she barks incessantly at her doghouse and what makes her roll her toys so obsessively that her nose is rubbed raw.

Georgia, known to lick the face of anyone who comes near.

Having those teeth extracted, Dr. McMillan and other vets said, must have been excruciating. Even with medication, dogs are in pain after losing one tooth, which may take more than an hour of digging, prying and leveling to pull.

NPR news reported that Leo, a former Bad Newz dog, is now working as a therapy dog for cancer patients.

July 7, 2008

Michael Vick filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, with assets around $16 million and liabilities over $20 million.

November 25, 2008 The State Case – Guilty Pleas
Each defendant pled guilty to dogfighting. Cruelty to animals charges were dropped. Each received a three-year suspended prison term and a $2,500 fine, which will also be suspended if they pay court costs and follow probation requirements for four years.

According to an AP news report, “After the hearing, Surry County Commonwealth Attorney Gerald Poindexter approached Vick’s mother and hugged her, saying, ‘At least some of this is over.’”

Upon resolving the state charges, Vick became eligible to complete his federal prison term in a halfway house, rather than remain in federal prison until his scheduled release date of July 20, 2009. He expects to be reinstated in the NFL.
